The research of the Chair of Electrical Energy Systems focuses on the study of electrical and electrochemical energy storage systems and energy converters in consideration of the systems employed.
One focus of these research activities is analysing and modelling electrochemical energy systems such as Lithium-ion batteries and PEM fuel cells. The group also researches the methods of battery system technology for mobile and stationary applications and develops model-based algorithms for modern battery and energy management systems. The topics are grouped into horizontal and vertical projects, as depicted in the illustration below.
The group's experimental, theoretical, and methodical expertise stands out due to its work in the following fields:
- the electrochemical, electrothermal, and electromechanical analysis of the performance and ageing of electrochemical energy storage systems and energy converters;
- the modelling of short-term (performance) and long-term (ageing) behaviour of batteries and fuel cells;
- model-based state estimation and performance, energy, and lifespan prognosis;
- electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and time domain analysis (distribution of relaxation times);
- control, observer, and filter concepts for energy systems;
- model-based algorithms for battery and energy management systems.
The chair is also a member of the University of Bayreuth's Centre for Energy Technology (ZET) and the Bavarian Center of Battery Technology (BayBatt).
